Are you planning a big night singing karaoke songs at your local karaoke bar? Maybe you would like to enter the karaoke contest? Or perhaps you already tried some karaoke, and decided your show would be more spectacular if you could improve your singing a bit?

Good news! Anyone can learn to sing karaoke songs like a pro! All it takes is patience, practice, and a few basic singing tips to bring out the karaoke star in you.

First of all, you need to practice, practice, and practice some more. Remember the old adage: “Practice makes perfect!” Sing everywhere. Sing all kinds of songs. Nothing beats singing in the shower! You get that nice echo, and all that moisture in the air really hydrates your vocal chords for a great sound. Turn on the radio and sing along every time you drive anywhere. Need to clean the house or the garage? Sing your karaoke songs while you clean. Sing while you mow the lawn or cook dinner. You will be surprised at all the practice you can get while doing other things. The more you practice, the more your singing will improve.

Once of the very best things you can do to improve your karaoke songs is to get a home karaoke machine, and practice doing the real thing. You can work out your entire show to perfection.

Your karaoke songs will also benefit from some professional tips. Basically, you need to create space in your body that lets the songs just flow out effortlessly to the world. What? How do you do that? There are 3 main techniques. Using these techniques will make your voice sound stronger without straining your vocal chords; they will allow you a wider range of notes; and you won’t run out of breath so quickly. They are:

1. Breathe with your diaphragm. Fill up your lungs as much as you possibly can. Feel the space under your ribs filling up with extra air? This is your diaphragm, and you need to expand this to bring in enough air to sing properly. Practice freeing your voice with this air. Breathe in to a count of four. Hold it for four counts. Let it out for eight counts. Warm up like this. Then sing, letting your diaphragm control bringing in the air and letting it out.

2. Let your soft palate, the fleshy part on top of your mouth right in front of your throat, rise to open up the throat. You can feel it if you try to stifle a yawn. This creates more space for the sound to flow out full and melodiously. Think of yawning, then practice singing with your throat more open.

3. This one is much easier. Keep your mouth open when you sing.

If you feel you need personal coaching, take some voice lessons, or join a choir.

Another way to make your karaoke songs sound better is to record yourself singing. You can hear for yourself what you really sound like. Then decide which areas you would like to improve. Also, you can hear your singing by pressing a finger against one ear and closing it up while you sing.

Two of the most important ways you can improve your karaoke songs are to choose songs which go well with your own voice, and choose songs which you are passionate about. When a song is close to your heart, your passion comes through in your singing. You can make the song yours. Karaoke songs are not just about how well you can sing, or how perfectly you can hit the notes. You can bring the house down, and be the best show of the night by making a song totally yours. The audience will feel your emotions and your passion, and experience it the way you do.

Learn every word of the karaoke songs you have chosen to perform. Be familiar with every nuance of the song. Practice some movements for the instrumental breaks when you are not singing. In other words, practice your show, not just the singing of the song. Because your show IS the karaoke song. Your show is what people will remember.

As a singer you have a great talent for expressing powerful emotions through the art of music. But, there might be a time when it feels like your singing abilities aren’t progressing as quickly as you would like anymore.

If you can learn to step up to the plate with your awesome singing voice, you might have a chance of really sticking out in your area. Here are 5 fast and easy singing tips to give your rockstar vocals a little bit of a push in the right direction.

1. Practice breathing exercises. If you’re having trouble getting through some of the lines you’re singing on stage, you might not be breathing correctly. It might sound a bit silly, but to breathe correctly, keep your shoulders fixed as you inhale oxygen into you lungs. Practice breathing slowly while watching your stomach inflate with air.

2. Know your vocal range. Someone whose voice cracks often while singing is an indication of not being warmed up, but also of not singing in their range. If a song is not in your range, either throw that song away or transpose it to a lower key to save your rockstar voice some embarrassment.

3. Decrease your air flow for lower pitches. For higher pitches, increasing your air flow is necessary, so obviously the opposite is true with lower pitches. Release the air from your lungs at a slower rate and feel that note come out smoother and more focused.

4. Record your personal sessions. You might not be able to tell how your singing is being received when you’re performing, so recording your practices might not be a bad idea. You can actually pin point some of the habits and problems that make your performances less appealing.

5. If your voice is damaged, rest your vocals. If you have a pretty bad night or you’re sick, sometimes the best thing to do is to just shut up. Walk around all day with a pad and some paper or avoid human contact at all so you can practice some real vocal rest.

Learning to be a great singer can be difficult and frustrating, but when the competition starts to get in your face, you can’t give up. Put these easy tips into action and start belting out your awesome rockstar voice.

As an organist, I have been working in club land in the North of England for the past 30 years or so and one of the crucial qualifications in this environment is the ability to sight read music on demand.

When I say music this can be anything from a beer mat to a ripped piece of paper repaired with sellotape and stained with beer.

To be fair most of the music is written by professionals and is nice to read but not always easy.

As a club organist, you do not get a band call. In fact, you are lucky to get five minutes to scan through between 10 and 15 pieces of music. Some written in different keys, and every organist will tell you they hate it when they get the dreaded 6 sharps or 6 flats or even 7 sharp keys in a piece of music that just happens to contain a solo especially written for you.

So how do you improve your sight-reading? Well I asked my music teacher this very question as I embarked on my club land career. His answer was to practice sight-reading. He went on to tell me that session musicians practice by picking up any music book start playing on page one and continue until they have finished the book.

Does it work? Yes it does. Try it for yourself, pick up any piece of music you can find, preferably one that you are not that familiar with, then start to play, but do not stop. If you make a mistake it does not matter, you are not practising how to play this piece of music you are practising sight-reading this piece of music.

If you really want to test yourself. Get yourself an audience. I practice my sight-reading every week in front of a 500 plus audience. Its surprising how your concentration improves.
